Newham Council regeneration given a green light

Our recent meeting

On Monday 16 November 2015 a number of Greater Carpenters Neighbourhood Forum members attended a meeting where they questioned Newham Council regeneration and planning officers about the council’s redevelopment proposals for the Carpenters Estate.

In this meeting Forum Members strongly challenged Newham Council’s proposals about redeveloping the estate. When providing this challenge Forum members highlighted that refurbishment of homes on the estate is the preferred option for many of the estate’s residents – a summary of points raised during this meeting was sent to Newham Council for consideration at their cabinet meeting. Unfortunately, the regeneration and planning officers present asserted that the council is committed to pursuing estate’s wholesale redevelopment.

Newham Council had a cabinet meeting

Following on from this meeting Newham Council had a cabinet meeting last Thursday 19 November 2015 where, amongst other things, they discussed the report produced by Newham planning and regeneration officers which explored options for redeveloping the estate.

Out come

In this meeting cabinet members unanimously voted in favour of the report’s recommendation for Newham Council to pursue a Joint Venture partnership where the council will procure a suitable partner to work with to redevelop the estate.

What next?

In light of this decision by the Council it is important that the Forum begins to make progress in developing a Neighbourhood Plan for the GCN, which will outline our collective visions for this neighbourhood.

Developing this Plan will give us a greater chance of realising our aspirations not only for the Carpenters Estate but also the GCN more broadly.

For those interested in helping to develop this Plan please do come down to the next Forum meeting which will take place.
